Post-Surgical Recovery FAQs

Yes. Dr. Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is commonly used to support post-surgical recovery by helping reduce swelling, encourage lymphatic flow, and improve comfort during healing. It is frequently used following procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast surgery, reconstruction, C-sections, and orthopaedic procedures. By supporting the body’s natural recovery processes, MLD can help you feel more comfortable and recover with greater confidence.

The ideal timing depends on your procedure and your surgeon’s recommendations. Many clients begin treatment within the first few days to weeks after surgery to help manage swelling, support healing, and improve comfort. If you’re unsure, we’ll work with you and your medical team to determine the most appropriate timing for your recovery.

Every recovery is different. The number of sessions depends on the procedure, the amount of swelling present, and how your body is healing. For many cosmetic surgery clients, we often recommend 2–3 sessions in the week before surgery and approximately twice-weekly treatment for the first 4–6 weeks after surgery. During your initial consultation, we’ll assess your needs and create a personalised recovery plan.

Yes. Reducing post-surgical swelling is one of the primary reasons people seek Manual Lymphatic Drainage. MLD uses gentle, precise techniques to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid, helping reduce fluid retention, pressure, and discomfort. As swelling settles, many clients find they feel more comfortable and can see their surgical results more clearly.

Fibrosis is a common part of the healing process following liposuction and body contouring procedures. It occurs when collagen fibres form during tissue repair, creating areas of firmness, tightness, or uneven texture beneath the skin. Early intervention with Manual Lymphatic Drainage, movement therapy, and appropriate scar management may help support healing, improve tissue mobility, and reduce the impact of fibrosis.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can play an important role in scar recovery by helping reduce swelling around the scar, improving tissue mobility, and supporting healthy healing. When combined with targeted scar and adhesion therapy, treatment may help soften scars, reduce tightness, and improve how scars look and feel over time.

Yes. Tummy tuck recovery often involves swelling, tightness, reduced mobility, and scar healing. Manual Lymphatic Drainage can help support recovery by reducing swelling, improving comfort, and assisting the healing process. It may also be combined with scar therapy and movement-based rehabilitation to help restore mobility and function.

Absolutely. Many women experience swelling, scar tightness, reduced sensation, or a “shelf” around their C-section scar. Once your incision has healed sufficiently and your healthcare provider has given clearance, lymphatic drainage and scar therapy may help improve comfort, mobility, and confidence in your recovery.

Yes. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is frequently used following breast augmentation, breast reduction, mastectomy, and breast reconstruction procedures. Treatment can help manage swelling, support healing, improve comfort, and assist with scar mobility throughout the recovery process.

No referral is required. However, we are always happy to work alongside your surgeon, GP, physiotherapist, or other healthcare providers where appropriate. If you have specific post-operative instructions, please bring them to your appointment so we can tailor treatment to your recovery needs.

Treatment FAQs

Dr. Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised, evidence-informed therapy designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and support the movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. Often considered the gold standard in lymphatic care, MLD is commonly used to help reduce swelling, support post-surgical recovery, improve scar healing, and assist with conditions such as lymphoedema, lipoedema, and chronic inflammation.

MLD uses gentle, rhythmic techniques to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid away from congested areas and towards healthy lymphatic pathways. By supporting lymphatic circulation, MLD can help reduce swelling, fluid retention, pressure, and discomfort while promoting the body’s natural healing processes.

No. Dr. Vodder MLD is an extremely gentle treatment that works just beneath the skin rather than deep within the muscles. Most clients find treatment deeply relaxing and often notice their nervous system settling during a session. Many people leave feeling lighter, calmer, and more comfortable in their bodies.

Neuromuscular Taping (NMT), developed by David Blow, is an innovative elastic taping technique designed to support circulation, lymphatic drainage, movement, and tissue recovery. Unlike traditional taping methods that provide compression, NMT works through gentle decompression of the skin and underlying tissues, creating space that may help improve fluid movement and support healing.

By gently lifting the skin, Neuromuscular Taping creates microscopic decompression that can help improve lymphatic and circulatory flow. This may assist in reducing swelling, bruising, fibrosis, and tissue congestion while supporting healing between treatment sessions. One of the key benefits of NMT is that it continues working 24 hours a day while the tape is in place.

Lympha Press® is a sequential pneumatic compression system designed to support lymphatic and circulatory function. Using a series of specialised chambers that inflate and deflate in sequence, Lympha Press helps encourage the movement of fluid through the lymphatic system. It is commonly used to assist with swelling management, post-surgical recovery, lymphoedema, lipoedema, and chronic fluid retention.

While Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Neuromuscular Taping, and Lympha Press Compression Therapy are safe for most people, there are some situations where treatment may not be appropriate. Certain infections, acute medical conditions, uncontrolled cardiac issues, or other health concerns may require modification or postponement of treatment. A thorough health assessment is completed before treatment to ensure your care is safe and appropriate.

You don’t need to know exactly which treatment you require before booking. During your consultation, we’ll assess your health history, symptoms, recovery goals, and current presentation to determine the most appropriate approach. Treatment may involve a combination of Dr. Vodder MLD, Neuromuscular Taping, scar therapy, Lympha Press Compression Therapy, and movement-based rehabilitation to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
